knitting a lifetime
In this work, I traced a connection between my position on earth and the movement of the planets in space during my lifetime. The data set obtained is specific and particularly designed by my decisions in life. By working with this data on the software Rhinoceros 3D and Grasshopper, I was able to visualise, in an abstract manner, a collection of wavy lines that intertwine with each other resembling a few lines of knitting. By duplicating these lines along the y-axis, a knitted-like surface is created.
These digital textiles are the visualisation of the intangible traces of my history. As the designer of my life, I have been knitting year by year invisible yarns by looking at the stars. This digital material appears in front of me and informs my practice in a particular way. Now I can create with a never seen material, an almost biographical knit. Knowing my life, I can relate to the small jumps in the digital lines with my physical changes in the hemispheres. There is some sense of personal achievement in the contemplation of the surface and an intriguing expectation of how the textiles will develop in the upcoming years. As a designer, I’m confronted with the value of the result; it is something that I designed but, at the same time, is something that I see for the first time. As a dancer, I see the footprint of my dance on earth through a contemplation of the sky. And as a whole, I perceive the digital knit as a manifestation of my identity.
